Iconic Resourcing is delighted to partner with Alvarez & Marsal (A&M) in our exclusive search for a Corporate Tax Director. There has never been a more exciting time to join A&M in Glasgow as the firm continues to experience a period of rapid growth, offering candidates a state-of-the-art city centre office, clear development opportunities and a market-leading remuneration package.
Your New Firm
Alvarez & Marsal Taxand, an affiliate of Alvarez & Marsal (A&M), a leading global professional services firm, is an independent tax network made up of experienced tax professionals dedicated to providing customized tax advice to clients and investors across a broad range of industries.
Its professionals extend A&M’s commitment to offering clients a choice in advisors who are free from audit-based conflicts and bring an unyielding commitment to delivering high quality and responsive client service.
A&M’s tax team acts for some of the largest private equity firms and corporate organisations in both the UK and globally, as well as providing a full range of other specialist tax services to businesses and individuals. Their tax service lines continue to expand rapidly, growing fee income by c.36% in the year to October 2022. The firm’s plans are to grow this by a further 100% by October 2025.
Your New Glasgow Office
A&M opened its Glasgow office in early-2020 and have recently moved into a brand-new high spec office on St. Vincent Street. The Glasgow tax team currently comprises c.20 individuals, but the firm’s ambitious growth plans are to increase this to c.50 by October 2025. Most of the staff in Glasgow (as is the case across the UK) have a Big 4 or Top 10 background.
Currently, the Glasgow office comprises four departments – Corporate, Private Client Services, Funds and Reward & Employment Tax. This will also increase over the coming months as new tax specialisms (such as VAT, R&D, transfer pricing etc.) and other areas of the wider A&M business (such as restructuring and insolvency) expand into Glasgow from London.
Your New Role
An exciting new service line is being launched for private equity clients across the UK, which will be run by the corporate team in Glasgow. This service includes a variety of tax advisory work, compliance and tax reporting for portfolio companies owned by private equity funds. In your new role you will spend most of your time helping implement and manage this end-to-end service offering, working closely with the deal team and more junior members of the local team. Clients will be based across the UK and across a variety of sectors. Stakeholder management will be an important part of your role and will allow for a better understanding of opportunities on the deal side where follow-on work can arise.
A&M completed c.200 transactions in the UK in the year to October 2022, so it is expected that this will quickly result in a large and varied portfolio of corporate tax advisory work. Recent examples of projects arising include:
- Providing UK corporate tax input into and liaising with A&M’s worldwide tax resources for complex, multi-national group entity and debt restructuring projects for a worldwide offshore energy services group, along with worldwide tax compliance assistance and arranging advice on cash repatriation, R&D etc.
- Ongoing UK tax compliance and reporting services for a “stack” of companies owned by a private equity client and liaising with the transfer pricing team to provide ongoing transfer pricing services.
You will also spend time assisting the Senior Director in Glasgow in growing and managing a corporate tax compliance, advisory and M&A presence in the Scottish marketplace, particularly amongst larger corporate groups and Scottish private equity firms.
On a day-to-day basis you can expect to:
- Work with the Senior Director to manage and develop a tax service offering to access follow-on work from portfolio companies, working closely together with our deal team members
- Provide clients with advice on a wide range of UK and International corporate tax issues
- Identify opportunities for additional work with existing clients, portfolio companies and new clients, particularly in the Scottish marketplace
- Lead or manage business development initiatives
- Manage, mentor and assist with training and upskilling junior team members
- Liaise with Taxand (A&M’s global tax network) across the globe and coordinate international tax advice on client issues
We would hope you would be able to bring:
- CTA qualification (or equivalent)
- Strong and varied UK corporate tax advisory experience
- Experience in compliance and tax reporting
- Outstanding quality of work and proactive in work management
- A self-assured and strong communicator
- Ability to direct others while teaching and coaching them
- Flexibility in approach to clients and advice
- Friendly and enjoys working in a close and dynamic team
- Energetic, with the ability to grow
