Legal Finance Assistant – Edinburgh (Hybrid)
Permanent | Full-Time
We’re looking for an organised and detail-focused individual to join our finance team in our Edinburgh office. This is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys working in a fast-paced professional environment and wants to play a key role in supporting the financial operations of a busy legal practice.
What You’ll Be Doing
In this role, you’ll help manage the daily financial activity of the firm, ensuring our client and office accounts are handled accurately and in line with regulatory requirements. Your responsibilities will include:
-
Posting incoming funds to the appropriate accounts and keeping all receipt records up to date.
-
Setting up a range of electronic payments — including BACS, CHAPS, Faster Payments and international transactions — and carrying out the required compliance checks before release.
-
Processing payments, transfers, bill settlements, disbursements and adjustments through our financial system, as well as managing bulk uploads throughout the day.
-
Looking after the set-up, maintenance and closure of designated client accounts and ensuring all movements are recorded correctly.
-
Reviewing cheque requests, ensuring they meet internal approval requirements, and issuing them within agreed timescales.
-
Investigating items highlighted by daily bank reconciliations, resolving unmatched entries, cancelling out-of-date cheques and returning any surplus funds in line with firm procedures.
-
Working closely with fee earners, partners and other colleagues to support financial aspects of client matters.
-
Preparing and submitting cash and cheque lodgements.
-
Running monthly interest calculations and carrying out ad-hoc interest requests where needed.
-
Ensuring all documentation is filed electronically and available for audit or regulatory checks.
-
Assisting with the firm’s annual audit by preparing required records.
-
Participating in team meetings, sharing ideas for process improvements and helping keep procedures accurate and up to date.
-
Supporting general cashroom tasks as required.
These tasks are shared across the team on a rotational basis, and full training will be provided.
What We’re Looking For
-
Experience working in a legal cashiering or high-volume finance support role would be advantageous.
-
An understanding of the Law Society of Scotland or SRA accounting rules is desirable.
-
Strong attention to detail, accuracy and a proactive approach to work.
-
Awareness of AML and VAT requirements would be helpful.
-
A team player who can also work confidently on their own when needed.
-
Clear and professional communication skills, both written and verbal.
-
Comfortable working in a hybrid environment and adapting to changing working practices.
-
Strong organisational skills and the ability to meet tight deadlines in a busy environment.
-
Familiarity with Aderant is beneficial but not essential.
-
Confident using Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel and Outlook).
-
Someone reliable, flexible and motivated, with a positive approach and willingness to support the wider finance team.
