Role: Legal Counsel – Construction

Iconic Resourcing has been instructed by a leading construction business who is seeking an experienced and highly skilled construction solicitor to join its dynamic in-house legal team. This role offers an exciting opportunity to provide comprehensive legal support to the key executive stakelhoders, Board, and various group companies. The successful individual will collaborate with key stakeholders to ensure legal and contractual matters are expertly managed.
Key Responsibilities:
- Preconstruction Legal Support: Provide legal advice during preconstruction, including input from GW2 to GW4, reviewing draft contracts, and preparing contract risk commentaries.
- Contract Negotiation: Assist group businesses in negotiating construction contracts, preparing advisory notes for project teams, and ensuring all formal contracts are in agreed terms prior to execution.
- Subcontract Management: Keep subcontract forms and notices up-to-date, provide improvement proposals, and assist in handling subcontract claims and adjudications.
- Strategic Legal Advice: Offer strategic guidance to the Executive Commercial Director and Board, ensuring compliance with industry developments and statutory regulations.
- Risk Management: Advise on risk associated with amendments to standard terms and conditions, draft subcontract amendments, and monitor legal risks and opportunities.
- Continuous Improvement: Propose continuous improvement programs, conduct business risk reviews, and develop legal training sessions for business units.
- Governance & Reporting: Ensure robust governance and risk management processes, input into monthly and quarterly reports, and monitor legal fees across the business.
Skills and Experience:
- Communication: Strong communicator with the ability to articulate complex legal matters clearly to both internal and external stakeholders.
- Leadership: Balanced leadership skills, acting as a role model and motivator within the team.
- Technical Expertise: In-depth knowledge of JCT, SBC, and NEC contracts, construction claims management, and procurement processes.
- Analytical Skills: Strong analytical abilities, including cost reporting and risk management.
- Training & Development: Experience in leading training sessions and developing commercial management employees.
Qualifications:
- Qualified solicitor with essential Scots Law qualification with co-qualification in English Law would be preferred.
- Substantial professional legal experience in a construction projects team.
- Beneficial in-house legal experience within a construction business.
- Non-contentious experience essential; additional contentious experience preferred.
- Masters degree beneficial but not essential.
- Track record of working with both private and public-sector customers.
- Experience in strategic development and presenting complex proposals.
