Payroll Assistant

We are looking for an organised and detail-focused Payroll Assistant to join a busy HR and Payroll team.
This role will support the delivery of an accurate, timely and customer-focused payroll service, ensuring employees are paid correctly and that payroll records and processes comply with relevant legislation, policies and procedures.
Key responsibilities
- Assist with the accurate and timely processing of monthly payroll, salaries, benefits and statutory payments.
- Maintain accurate employee records relating to pay, absence, pensions and statutory leave.
- Support payroll reporting and month-end/payroll processing activities.
- Respond to payroll queries from employees, managers and internal stakeholders.
- Liaise with external organisations regarding deductions, pensions, salary sacrifice and other payroll-related matters.
- Ensure payroll processes comply with PAYE, National Insurance, pension, GDPR and other relevant requirements.
- Assist with reconciliations, reporting, audit requirements and internal controls.
- Support the ongoing improvement and development of payroll processes and HR/Payroll systems.
- Contribute to a positive, collaborative and customer-focused team environment.
About you
We are looking for someone who is:
- Highly organised with excellent attention to detail.
- Numerate and comfortable working with data and spreadsheets.
- Experienced in payroll, HR, finance or a similar administrative environment.
- Confident using IT systems, particularly Excel and payroll/HR systems.
- Able to manage deadlines and work accurately in a busy environment.
- Comfortable handling confidential and sensitive information.
- A clear and professional communicator with a strong customer-service focus.
- A team player with a proactive approach to improving processes.
Knowledge of PAYE, National Insurance, pensions and statutory payroll requirements would be advantageous, although training and development will be provided for the right candidate.
